Our 16-Hour Expanded Duties Dental Assistant (EDDA) Certification Course, approved by the Georgia Board of Dentistry, is designed for current dental assistants who have been working in a dental office for 6 months or longer, as well as licensed professionals relocating to Georgia who wish to qualify for Expanded Duties Certification.
This intensive, two-part program blends online coursework with hands-on clinical training to help you develop the advanced chairside and restorative skills required to perform expanded functions under the supervision of a licensed dentist.
Entrance Requirements
To register for the EDDA Certification Program, applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria:

Hold current certification as a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA).

Be a graduate or eligible graduate of a one-year accredited dental assisting program or one approved by the Georgia Board of Dentistry.

Have been employed as a chairside assistant for at least six (6) continuous months within the past three (3) years under a licensed dentist.
Additional Requirement:
Proof of current CPR certification is required prior to participation in clinical sessions.
Program Orientation
Orientation is held approximately one week prior to the course start date.
During orientation, participants will:

Course Structure and Requirements
Total Duration: 16 Hours

Step 1: 8 Hours — Online Coursework and Assignments

Step 2: 8 Hours — In-Person Clinical Training and Final Exam
Students must complete all assignments, the final written and practical tests, and attend the full on-site training session to receive certification.
Readmission Policy
If a student is unable to complete the program due to valid personal or medical reasons, they may be readmitted to the next available session at no additional cost, pending administrative review.
Certification Awarded
Upon successful completion of all course requirements, students will receive the State of Georgia Expanded Duties Dental Assistant Certificate (EDDA) — qualifying them to perform expanded functions as permitted by Georgia law.

Skills and Competencies Covered
Students will receive advanced training and demonstration in the following Board-approved expanded functions:

Applying desensitizing agents to tooth surfaces and dentin prior to cementation
-
Placing cavity liners, bases, or varnish over unexposed pulp
-
Fabricating temporary crowns and bridges intraorally (adjustments performed outsi)
-
Performing face-bow transfers
-
Taking impressions for prosthesis repair or fabrication of night guards and passive orthodontic appliances
-
Placing and removing periodontal dressings and post-operative alveolar dressings in cases of diagnosed osteitis
-
Monitoring and adjusting nitrous oxide/oxygen levels (under dentist supervision)
-
Applying topical anti-cariogenic agents, pit and fissure sealants, and primer/bonding agents to etched enamel or dentin, and light-curing with a fiber-optic light source
-
Packing and removing retraction cord for restorative procedures as prescribed by the dentist

Changing bleaching agents during tooth whitening and using curing light activation (no lasers)

Re-bonding and removing orthodontic brackets with hand instruments

Making digital scans and impressions for orthodontic appliances and study models
